Omar, 10, Bangladesh

Omar works on the side of the road, crushing bricks for construction work.

Hivos Item

Every day around eight, ten year old Omar from Bangladesh goes to school with a couple of his friends. He likes his school and is pretty good at math, but often is too tired to concentrate on the lessons. He is not to blame for that, because Omar goes to school in the evening. At eight in the morning, he leaves for work.

Omar works on a roadside close to Dhaka, the nation’s capital. There, he crushes old bricks to grit, which is used to build new roads. To protect his hands, he ties little pieces of tyre aroud his fingers. At every blow, he squeezes his eyes to protect them from splinters. The sun is bright and hot, as it always is in Dhaka.
